Hello fellow beer drinkers!
It was a bright and sunny day for what many would consider the last day of summer. It was Labor day and I was standing in line for some of the best beer money could buy. What a way to end summer.My friend Bill and I trekked up the coast to Savannah without any real idea of what to expect. We had assumed that the event being held at the convention center would be indoors. Well we were wrong but not disappointed. The event took place on the back lawn overlooking the beautiful riverfront of Savannah. Simply gorgeous.

The price of admission ($40 per ticket) did well enough to keep the natty lite crowd away. It was refreshing to go to a festival without the village idiot high on cheap beer stalking the crowd like a after prom party in search of his lost date. No falling down stupid drunks here. I believe Ron Burgundy would have exclaimed “ Beer is a good choice!” if he’d been here. Classy crowd. You stay classy Savannah!

Oh the beer! We had over 130 choices of beer to sample. But we really only had once choice and that was to sample every last one of them! Armed with our collective pilsner sampler glasses we first hit the Harpoon Brewery and sampled the IPA.Tasty! From there we ended up in front of the Crown Valley Brewing booth. We were drawn there by “best in show ribbon” hung proudly on high for everyone to see. I ran into Bryan Siddle the Director of Operations who poured Bill and I the wining craft brew – Black Cabin Smoked Ale. I first watched Bill sample this thing of beauty. He took a sip and looked as if his face flushed red with amazement would explode with joy. He said nothing but drank some more. Then having found his voice he gave his review of this mysterious and delicious craft brew…”Damn that’s good beer”. Then it was my turn. My taste buds jumped for joy! This brew has just the right amount of craft beer twang with a smokey back note that brings to mind the best backyard burger you’ve ever had. If you can find it get it. If you don’t have it at your local convenience store ask for it until they stock it. Black Cabin Smoked Ale is one outstanding craft brew.I would be remiss If I didn’t give a rundown of the craft brewers that made the show. All you have to do is checkout The list of Brewers of the 2011 Savannah Craft Brew Fest. If you didn’t make it this year you need to plan ahead and go next year. I’ll see you there!
